Friday, December 13, 2013–South Lake Tahoe native Maddie Bowman took top honors at today’s Dew Tour Ski Pipe finals in Breckenridge, Colorado, further securing her spot on the US Ski Team headed for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Bowman, who skis on Sierra-at-Tahoe’s pro team, was joined on the podium by third-place finisher Brita Sigourney, a Squaw Valley athlete also in the running for a Sochi roster spot. Bowman landed a cork 900 trick in her first run that cemented her win despite crashing on her second run (each skier got two and had their lowest score tossed out.)

Pipe skiing will make its debut at the 2014 Sochi Games due in large part to lobbying from the late Canadian skier Sarah Burke, who died in early 2012 as the result of a head injury suffered while skiing in the superpipe. Bowman credited Burke in her televised post-event interview.

Also joining Bowman and Sigourney on the podium was 2nd place finisher Angeli VanLaanen, of Bellingham, Washington.
